perhaps the magic doesn’t work until you really believe that it can

I used to think that but if you look at Chaos magic or the Sigil ideas of A O Spare (as well as scientific ‘laboratory tests’ whatever they are worth) then it is clear that the magic is intended to work only when you forget it. Ie - the act of believing in it, or thinking about it at all (as you must in order to believe in it) hinders the operation.
And of course, plenty of people believe things that are ridiculous and are constantly proven to be so on a regular basis.

maybe the act of thinking about, then believing it, transfers the magic into the soul, so you feel the effects of it only when you aren’t conscious of it. Perhaps too much time is spent thinking about the soul, rather than living through it.

"Majic” Is a term we use for when we can not understand the logic of how a thing works or has come to be. Once we can scientifically explain how or why it is no longer majic.
What the eye can see but the brain cannot rationalise is thrown under the blanket and deemed majical.

Magic
I intended to write something about magic in a little while but I have been inspired to pre-empt myself as it were by a post by Zac on his blog Alchemical Braindamage.
